Cloître de Notre-Dame-en-Vaux

The cloister of Notre-Dame-en-Vaux was built between 1170 and 1180. It was destroyed in 1759 by the canons of the adjacent church in order to build houses for themselves. The excavations which were begun in 1963 have led to the discovery of three-quarters of the cloister and made it possible to reconstruct four of the arches supported by the double pillars. However, as it was impossible to rebuild the cloister at its original location, a museum was created nearby. The figures on the cloister pillars are magnificent examples of early Gothic sculpture, and are some of the first column-statues. Sculpture at that time had more volume and sought to represent movement. Side by side, there are the delicate, fine limestone faces of the foolish virgins who weep holding their overturned lamps, rough demons and bent, old prophets.
